SiGMA takes on Kilimanjaro Challenge
The 12th Kilimanjaro Challenge has officially launched. SiGMA has answered the call to meet a fund-raising challenge and climb the highest free-standing mountain in the world at the end of this year.
Volunteers from SiGMA will form part of the plucky team of 17, raising money to help an ailing Ethiopian community.
The challenge, which was founded by the late Fr George Grima, has over the past 11 years raised in excess of €720,000. The much-needed funds have been a boon to ten projects based in Kenya and Ethiopia, which were orchestrated by the ‘Missionary Movement Jesus in Thy Neighbour’.
The projects financed by the Challenge include the construction of a school and a convent in the Ethiopian village of Bulbula, a wing for a 3-in-1 projects, a house hosting 100 physically disabled, deaf and blind children in Kenya, a clinic in Sakko, a Kindergarten school in Gambella, Dembidolo area, Jemu area and WushWush, Ethiopia.
Co-organiser Austin Cachia commented that they aim to collect €90,000 through this year’s challenge. The money raised is earmarked for the completion of a Centre for Disabled Children in Bonga, Ethiopia. The project, which will cost in the region of 1.2 million euro was initially set up by the late Fr. George Grima who sadly died in September 2017 before the project could be completed. In light of this, the project will be named in his honour.
The SiGMA volunteers have been training alongside their teammates since March and will make their way to Kilimanjaro, Africa on the 24th of December. After just over a week on the mountain, the team will continue their journey, passing into Ethiopia for the project’s inauguration.
A number of events will be held throughout the year to collect the required donations. One highlight is a summer BBQ, which will take place at the Hilton hotel on the 31st July 2018, with all proceeds from the event going towards financing the project.
