Early celebrations as Macau casinos confirm employee bonuses

Chinese New Year sees Macau casinos employees receive their bonuses amid the COVID-19 pandemic

Due to the pandemic there was some concern regarding the annual bonus of  Macau’s casino workforce.

However, all six of Macau’s casino operators have now confirmed they will pay employees their bonuses just in time for Chinese New Year.

SJM Holdings was the first to confirm the bonuses, followed by MGM China, Wynn Macau and Melco Resorts and Entertainment. Sands China and Galaxy Entertainment Group were the last two to confirm the bonuses

Galaxy (pictured) joined in last week and announced that all non-executive team members at the senior management level and below, Galaxy Macauwhich, in Galaxy’s case, means about 98% of its workforce will receive the extra money on February 10 just two days before the Chinese New Year.

Galaxy is thanking its staff for staying committed to the company’s goals during these unprecedented times and new challenges due to the pandemic.

Sands China indicated that the one month’s salary bonus will be paid out to over 26,000  employees; however, the bonus is capped at MOP45,000 (approximately $5,600).

Sands China expects to be able to give out the bonuses in the hands of its employees on February 8, adding that the company was appreciative of the “dedication and contributions” of its employees throughout last year.

However, with such good news comes the bad news as Macau Business reports that a satellite casino in the city has been encouraging and pushing for forced resignations on certain personnel, which has caught the eye of the Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL).

The New Macau Gaming Staff Rights Association had reportedly received a number of complaints and forwarded its findings to the DSAL.
