Wanda Vazquez Garced signed the Senate Bill 1534 which will allow sports betting and Esports in Puerto Rico
A few months ago, Puerto Rico began discussions regarding regulations on sports betting, initiating the launch of the betting vertical. Now, the former Governor of Puerto Rico - Wanda Vazquez Garced (pictured below) – has signed Senate Bill 1534 into law which opens the doors for sports betting and Esports in Puerto Rico, one of her last acts before stepping down.
The reason behind her support for this Bill is that sports betting and Esports will have a positive impact on job creation within the country, creating thousands of jobs, while also “creating new sources of revenue.” The new sources of revenue will contribute to government programs and services such as health services and the educational sector.
However, the project is still in its early stages and therefore, the new government led by Pedro Pierluisi will be responsible for enforcing the proposed measures and enliven the new industries.
The Executive Director of the Gaming Commission, José Maymó Azize (left), spoke to Primera Hora and stated that the Bill 1534 also includes the amendment of a few regulations, most notably the law which required players to register online or in person. This law was changed so that people must register, for the first time, in person.
Moreover, the Gaming Laboratories International (GLI) has been selected to act as an advisor in regards to Esports regulations for operators in Puerto Rico. It is expected that Esports alone could generate $87million on profits for the government in the first five years.
