France's gaming regulator, ANJ, reported that the nation experienced a 35% boost in online gaming revenue, reaching €587m ($715m/£505m) for Q1 this year
ANJ dedicate this boost in revenue to a 19.1% rise in active player accounts, reaching 3.1 million.
Specifically, the sports betting vertical of online gaming skyrocketed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, boasting an 78.8% increase in wagers (totaling €2.18bn) from 2020. This resulted in €357m in betting revenue, where €172m was paid in levies.
Football led the pack, contributing €1.3bn worth of wagers, basketball was second with €362m, followed by tennis with €340m.
In addition, active sports betting accounts rose 29.2% to 2.5 million. The ANJ added that this number is expected to increase this summer as a result of the Olympics and Euro 2020.
