Coljuegos, together with other authorities, seized over 871 illegal slots in 2020, with Quindio topping the list for illegal activity
Coljuegos continues to show why they are the main regulator in the LatAm market after shutting down numerous illegal gambling activities. By end 2019, Coljuegos ordered the closure of 3,365 illegal websites since regulating online gambling in 2016. This year was no different for the Colombian regulator as they continue to stamp their authority on the gambling market in Colombia.
During investigations in 2020, related to illegal gambling, Coljuegos have managed to shut over 871 illegal machines as the Colombian regulator concluded that they had all been operating without a licence. Coljuegos were not working alone during the whole operation as the Army, the national Attorney General and the Fiscal and Customs Police (POLFA) all gave a helping hand.
The total revenue recorded by the illegal machinery was at an estimated COP27.7bn or $8.1million. Furthermore, around 90 prosecutions were executed in 2020, all related to illegal gambling activities.
Areas with most illegal machinery:
- Quindio – 256
- Cartagena – 206
- Barranquilla – 168
- Medellin – 110
Carlos Andres Zarate, who is in charge of controlling illegal operations, expressed his delight at the work carried out by his team to tackle illegal gambling especially during the pandemic which hampered their operations.
We have managed to advance with the seizure of a very important number of machines that were operating illegally and that translates into lost resources that could have been used to finance the health of Colombians.
This new report comes after La Federacion Colombiana de Empresarios de Juegos de Suerte y Azar, commonly known as Fecoljuegos, shut down an illegal gambling racket worth COP3bn per month. The illegal operator, Los Pokers, were operating 62 different URLs, with all services provided by a Malta-based supplier.
