We met Hans Kern, co-founder at Wettbasis.com, for an interview about his business and thoughts about the industry.
Hello Hans! How did you find Affiliate Grand Slam in Tallinn?
First of all, I want to say thank you for inviting me to Tallinn, Marius. It’s a long time since we met at an Affiliate Conference in Budapest during a workshop. You worked for Gambling Affiliation at this time. I got to know you as an honest and loyal person, who is always there for us affiliates. And yes, of course I had a great time Tallinn. I have never been there before and I really enjoyed these two days. But my flight back was on Saturday at 6:15 am – a bit early, so almost no sleep.
How did you come to enter the online gaming space and set up your company?
Florian and I started with Wettbasis.com in 2002 – 15 years ago, time is flying. We always liked sports betting for ourselves and wanted to create a small site with betting links mainly for us. At the beginning it was just a hobby. We worked for two international companies in the finance department .
Now we are a team of eight people in our office in Vienna and a lot of freelancers all over the world who are writing the articles and predictions for our sites.
Developing unique content is a key pillar of your strategy. What will be your primary focus on this front over the next 6 months?
Unique content is very important for us. We are always focused on producing quality articles and we always discuss within our team how we can make our articles better, for example with infographics, statistic tools, etc …
Which markets do you focus on and do you see any potential in the emerging markets ? How do you find the DACH market and competition?
For www.wettbasis.com , Germany is of course our primary focus. In Germany there are a few big affiliate sites and at the moment it is very difficult for newcomers to enter the market. Next year, in 2018, the German government will regulate the betting market. I expect a lot of changes. Many small operators will disappear from the German market, but it’s too early now for more intense discussions.
How have Google’s algorithm updates affected the way you go about traffic generation, SEO and content at your company?
Because we are doing quality work, Google Updates do not affect our rankings. Our users know us for our good work and Wettbasis became a real brand in the sports betting industry.
Are there any exciting plans in the works that you can tell us about?
Of course we are working on new and cool features, but it’s too early to talk about it. One of the biggest project for 2017 is a new modern and responsive design for www.wettbasis.com .
What challenges and opportunities has the move to mobile presented you with?
All of our sites are mobile, of course. In our statistics you can see that 60% of our users are mobile users. You wouldn’t survive anymore without a mobile site, it is getting more and more important.
What do you see as the biggest challenges ahead for your business and the wider affiliate sector in 2017?
Well, the biggest challenge is our new responsive design for Wettbasis.com and that we don’t loose any Google Rankings because of the changing.
What two pieces of advice would you give to any new affiliate starting today?
Search your own niche, where you are really good. And just be patient!
Do you play slots and what would you do with 1 million Euro from jackpot winnings?
No, I don’t play slots. Betting on football is more fun for me. But if I would win 1 million Euro, I would first take a long journey with my wife and then, I would also invest in our Uganda Project at Terra Varietas (terravarietas.com ) , our non profit association. In January I have been to Uganda, visiting our project there, where we support a baby home and a school. Meeting the babies and children, learning and playing with them and also visiting the new guest house for volunteers who want to come to Uganda and help was a great experience. Our main purpose is to give these young children a future!
