Waterfront to be the fifth integrated casino resort in Manila’s Entertainment City

Waterfront Philippines Inc, led by Gatchalian, finally wins case in the Manila Regional Trial Court and the Court of Appeals to acquire casino license

It has been a decade since the Philippine casino operator Waterfront Philippines Inc, also known as WPI, had announced its plans to build an integrated casino resort at Manila’s Entertainment City.

Waterfront is bound to be the fifth integrated casino operator in the city, which will include a hotel with 2,500 rooms. The four other integrated resorts in the area are Bloomberry Resort Corp’s Solaire Resort & Casino, Melco’s and Belle Corp’s City of Dreams Manila, Okada Manila and Travellers International Hotel Group Inc’s Westside City Resorts World.

Waterfront Philippines Inc. (WPI), which is led by Gatchalian, filed a case against PAGCOR for overlooking its Waterfront Casinoapplication for a gaming license to build the Grand Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Entertainment City despite paying the application fee and submitting all requirements in February 2008.

Gatchalian eventually won his case in the Manila Regional Trial Court and the Court of Appeals.

In February 2020, the Supreme Court denied PAGCOR’s request for certiorari, citing failure to adequately show, both the Manila RTC and the Court of Appeals’, reversible mistakes in the judgments.

“In October 2020, Waterfront received notice from its legal counsels that the Supreme Court decision has become final and executory by being recorded in the Book of Entries and Judgements,” said Waterfront.

According to Waterfront Philippines’s 2018 annual report, The Philippine-listed company currently runs two casino hotel properties in Cebu, namely the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, said to include more than 500 guest rooms; and the Waterfront Mactan Island Hotel and Casino, which currently has 164 guest rooms. The firm’s casino hotel properties each feature gaming facilities under the “Casino Filipino” brand, controlled by PAGCOR.
